Straight Shooting is on the way to bigger and better things, having joined Yaffa Media, the publisher of Sporting Shooter magazine, in a move that will give us far greater resources than we have now.

Mick Matheson has taken over the editorship of Sporting Shooter magazine from Marcus O’Dean, who has left after nearly 15 years in the role. Mick’s first issue in the April 2022 edition.

Straight Shooting and the Sporting Shooter website will gradually be amalgamated over the coming months, resulting in something better than either can offer now.

Once the transition is complete we expect to bring you a far greater range of quality content you’re already used to on Straight Shooting; not just more of it, but additional types of content that only Sporting Shooter can offer.

That includes the incredible experience and expertise of Nick Harvey, who has been a gun writer for longer than any other current writer in the world.

Founded in 1961, Sporting Shooter is Australia’s top selling and most influential hunting magazine, and it is expanding throughout print, digital, web, TV, direct, social media and mobile app.

All the contributors currently associated with Straight Shooting will continue to be involved.

Mick is no stranger to Sporting Shooter, having contributed to the magazine for many years and spent time as its web editor.

“I am thrilled to be joining Sporting Shooter – it’s a tremendous opportunity to continue and improve what is already Australia’s leading recreational hunting media brand,” he said.

“I am excited to have Mick join the Sporting Shooter team and continue the legacy of the 61+ year old title, adding his ideas, initiatives and innovation to grow its audience over all channels,” said Chris Yu, Yaffa Media Outdoor Group Publisher.

  1. Congrats Mick on another editorship! I have followed you since I met you at a test ride day at Eastern Creek in late ‘92 and like what you bring to a magazine.
Sporting Shooter can only get better (I hope) under your watch but can I make a request please? The regular columns read like they are chopped/truncated to fit the page count – almost to the point that they don’t make sense. Please, give the guys more column space to let them get their point across.
    Cheers and best of luck!
